Celebrating the Career of Gary Essex
We are announcing the retirement of Gary Essex from the partnership and Johnsons MME, effective 1 July 2024.
Gary’s career, marked by unwavering dedication, expertise, and leadership, has profoundly impacted our firm and the broader accounting industry.
Gary’s Journey and Contributions
Gary’s journey with Johnsons MME began when he was in Year 10, gaining work experience in the Yarrawonga office, then known as Coopers & Lybrand, and choosing to study Year 11 & 12 subjects that might help a career in accountancy. He was successful in obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce with the University of Melbourne.
Gary’s commitment to playing football and cricket while studying full-time saw him returning regularly to Yarrawonga. In 1985, Gary applied for a role with Coopers & Lybrand in the Yarrawonga office. While he was accepted into the Practice, his role was to be based in the Albury office for six months. That six months ended up being 40 years!
Gary became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia in 1991 and was admitted as Partner in 2000. One of Gary’s significant contributions was his instrumental role in the 2000 de-merger from PricewaterhouseCoopers, as the result of a merger between Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand in 1998.
He was instrumental in co-founding Johnsons MME and his strategic foresight and leadership skills proved to be invaluable.
This was a pivotal moment that allowed Johnsons MME to pursue an independent path. This strategic move not only ensured our firm’s growth but also reinforced our commitment to providing personalised, client-focused services.
The name Johnsons MME honours our founding partner Fred Johnson, with MME representing the pioneering partners of 2000: Rod Mullavey, Hugh McKenzie-McHarg, and Gary Essex.
Gary’s professional journey reached its pinnacle when he held the position of Managing Director from 2011 to 2022.
Professional Excellence and Client Dedication
Throughout his tenure, Gary has exemplified professionalism and dedication to client service. His approach has always been centred on understanding clients’ unique needs and delivering tailored solutions.
Gary’s ability to build long-lasting relationships based on talking straight, communicating honestly, being professional and ethical, and having a strong commitment to the community has been a cornerstone in his career.
Legacy and Future Endeavours
Gary’s retirement marks the end of an era for Johnsons MME, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide our firm. His strategic insights and dedication to client service have set a high standard for all of us to follow. As he embarks on this new chapter, we are confident that his impact will be embedded in the Johnsons MME culture for many years to come.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gary for his remarkable contributions to Johnsons MME, the industry, and the wider community. His expertise, leadership, and friendship have been invaluable, and we wish him all the best in his retirement.
Gary will continue to consult to the firm as needed. If you have any inquiries or would like further information about Gary Essex’s retirement, please feel free to contact your Johnsons MME advisor.
